September 8 - “The Difference that One Makes”
Don Emerson, pastor/elder of Maranatha Baptist Church - Logan Utah

Today is not the time for Christians to despair about the condition of our culture. Instead it is time to wake up to the fantastic opportunity God is providing us. There is no shortage of people with dry dusty hearts ready for the “rivers of living water” flowing from the life of any Spirit filled believer. All it takes is one person available to God. Never under estimate what God can do through you. The life of a priest named Jehoiada in 2 Chronicles 23 and 24 is a powerful example of influence one person living for God can have on the world around him. The setting is the Old Testament in a period of great turmoil – the continual sad cycle in Kings and Chronicles of bad kings and good kings. At one point a young six year old boy named Joash became king and during his reign led the nation in a godly direction.

The scripture is quite specific about who was behind this spiritual renewal: “Joash did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight throughout the lifetime of Jehoiada the priest (24:2). And again, “… the burnt offerings were sacrificed continually in the Name of the Lord during the lifetime of Jehoiada the priest (24:14). A king and a nation honored God because one man refused to give into despair and instead believed God could change any situation. So never underestimate what God can do with one person.

A scripture that has long fascinated me is I Corinthians 7:12-14: “If a Christian man has a wife who is an unbeliever and she is willing to continue living with him, he must not leave her. And if a Christian woman has a husband who is an unbeliever, and he is willing to continue living with her, she must not leave him. For the Christian wife brings holiness to her marriage, and the Christian husband brings holiness to his marriage. Otherwise, your children would not have a godly influence, but now they are set apart for him.”

I am aware of the theological debate over the meaning of this passage, but I don’t think anyone would deny that a key truth is: the power of influence of one person. Whenever one individual lives in faithful obedience to God no matter what the circumstances, God has access into that situation through that individual. Think about it carefully: there is power in one life lived for God.

Also, we must never underestimate the power of one person wholly yielded to God to hold back spiritual darkness. Before Joash came to the throne, the spiritual darkness of the nation was deep and depressing. The wicked Athaliah had ruled for seven years. There came a moment when one individual decided before God that the darkness of Athalliah’s reign had gone on too long: “In the seventh year of Athaliah’s reign, Jehoiada the priest decided to act. He got up his courage and made a pact with five military commanders …” (I Chronicles 23:1). Jehoiada led the coup that put Joash on the throne. Here was a man determined to stand against the darkness, and God used him during his lifetime to bring light to a nation.

The unyielding resolve of a God honoring believer makes a difference. Godly parents have incredible power. Who made the difference in Daniel who against all odds took a stand against the darkness of the pagan kingdom Babylon. There is no doubt in my mind it was his parents. “Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it” (Proverbs 22:6). Parents, don’t bemoan the darkness of our culture, get busy and release the light of the living God into your children. Young Daniels, Esthers, and Josephs are needed now! They are in your home waiting for you to light the way

Sometimes it is only after a person is gone that we have the true measurement of the influence of that life: “Jehoiada … was buried among the kings in the city of David, because he had done so much good in Israel for God and his temple” (I Chronicles 24:16). But immediately after his death the king and nation took a different direction. Joash even killed Jehoiada’s son who, as a prophet of God, warned the king and nation of God’s judgment. Sadly, when Jehoiada died so did the light of God in a nation.

D. L. Moody was galvanized into commitment by hearing, “the world has yet to see what God can do with one man wholly yielded to Him. He said, “I will be that man.” Christian historians looking back on the nineteenth century write of the powerful impact he made in America and Europe. And his impact continues. His biography has touched many young preachers. It did mine. He and other godly men and women through the centuries live on. In every generation there are the few like Abel who “although . . . long dead, still speak to us because of his faith” (Hebrews 11:4). Determine to be a man or woman like that. It is up to you. God is ready. Our generation needs you.

In the words of Jesus “You are the light of the world – like a city set on a mountain, glowing in the dark for all to see. Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand for all to see, so everyone will praise your heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:14-16). As a child of God you bring light wherever you go. The darkness has to flee when you show up! Never despair! Stay the course if you are the only Christian in your home, school, or work. Utah is a dark place spiritually, but it is also full of light: you and all other believers whom Jesus calls “a light set on a hill that cannot be hid.” Let the light of Jesus shine out of your life wherever you live in this state. Through your life God has an open door to your family, neighbors and community. Let the light loose! Remember the Father’s pointed words: “The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him” (2 Chronicles 16:9). You are never alone!

In the classic film, “it’s a wonderful life” George Bailey, played by James Stewart, at a one point wishes he had never been born. An angel lets him see what would have happened to his community - Bedford Falls becomes Potterville, a place of bars, strip joints and promiscuity – if he had never been born. “Viewing a community he doesn’t recognize, Bailey says, what’s this?” The angel says, “You have been given a great gift, a chance to see what your world would be like without you.” You can make a difference! The life of one person who day after day walks in intimacy with God and refuses to give in to unbelief and despair has a powerful far ranging influence. Don’t ever think your life makes little difference. I am so grateful for the impact of the many believers who loved God and spoke into my life throughout the years. Some who have encouraged me the most to a passionate pursuit of God will never know this side of heaven the power of their life. But one day they will know

Remember time is short and eternity is closer every day. None of us know how much time we have left on earth. Every day is a golden God given opportunity to influence those around us toward a great passion for Jesus and His Kingdom. Every day is an opportunity to impact our world. It is not an issue of deciding whether we will be an influence or not. We either reveal self or Jesus in every daily contact and relationship. You can be “a sweet perfume” of Jesus wherever you go (2 Corinthians 2:14-16). Release the light of the glory of God into the many opportunities that each day brings. Decide now, like Jehoiada, to make the influence of your life count for time and eternity. All it takes is one.

January 2004 - Your Triumphant Life
Mark Francis

For each of you, I have asked for a fresh word of encouragement for your lives in this
hour.  I ask the Holy Spirit to enliven the following expressions to truly create and
strengthen His life within you.

In the James Moffatt Translation of the Holy Bible, the passage in 2 Corinthians 2:14 is
rendered as follows...

“Wherever I go, thank God, he makes my life a constant pageant of triumph in Christ, diffusing the perfume of his knowledge everywhere BY ME.”  (emphasis mine)

Today, you need to hear this truth as given by God’s heart over your life RIGHT NOW:
Your life is diffusing the very aroma of fresh life of the risen Christ, because of your
intimate relationship with Him (i.e. “knowledge”).   He is doing this through you at all
times.  In fact, your life, according to His evaluation, is one of a “constant pageant of
triumph”.  Think about that.  This is no small thing.  The victory and triumph you walk in
is not small, insignificant and hidden behind some bush somewhere where no one but
the ants sees it.  Rather, God is going all out to promote, advertise, and make known in
the heavens and on earth HIS victory IN and THROUGH your life. You were separated
from Him, and His heart ached to have you with Him, all the while the enemy laughed.
But now —  YOU are HIS...HE HAS WON YOU BACK TO HIMSELF!! Relationship and
fellowship has been restored between YOU and HIM.  Do you not think He is ecstatic
about this? Think of it this way...Because of His eternal JOY, God is constantly
reminding the enemy, not just with words, but with fireworks, thunderings, lightenings,
angelic proclamations and eternity-shaking expressions from His mouth the fact of
YOUR redemption.  Your life is an exquisite pageant, a lavish, extravagant gala in
Heaven before ALL the host.    And if that is not enough, God transforms this gala into
an essence, a distinguishable fragrance, a perfume that you don’t just wear, but that
emanates outward from every part of your being.    Your presence in the world forms
and fashions a significant and vital portion of God’s kingdom on this earth RIGHT NOW.
You are not just a shell that He fills; no, you are NEW CREATURE that has new DNA.
You are no longer human, you are now a new species, one He calls SON or
DAUGHTER, a bride espoused to His Son Jesus.  His enjoyment over you is full, rich
and with much emotion.  Do you hear Him singing and dancing over you?

Today, extinguish any and all lies about who you are in the refreshing river of this word
from God for you in this hour.  Look in the mirror and speak this word over your life.
Believe from God’s mouth that you ARE a fragrance of Christ’s heart to this world and
that your God, your Father, is so in love with YOU that He cannot keep silent!!!

June 4, 2004 - Jesus, The Peaceful River (An Experiential Vision)
Mark Francis

                       Jesus...the Peaceful River

As I close my eyes, in this moment of truth,
I long for a vision of Jesus, the lover of my soul.
In the quietness of this early morning, a ray of light forms in the depth of my heart,
As it grows in power and form, I recognize a River flowing,
and there in the midst of the River is Jesus.
Smiling and with arms outstretched, He beckons me to come.

As I look around, My breath is taken away at the raw beauty of this place
The river is smooth as glass, with no movement on the surface,
Yet it is moving as I see it swell.
It is clear, but has touch of blue-green color, Which radiates to all on the banks.
The sun is shining, yet pails in comparison to the Son,
Who remains in the river, both in it, yet on its surface.
Again, He beckons me to come.

My heart within me leaps towards the bank,
As it longs to embrace the One who loves me.
As I approach the water, I know within that after getting in,
                       I will be ruined forever.
I enter, ever so gently, and the well of peaceful power Surges through my body and spirit.
Its as if every care has stopped screaming,
and disappeared at the presence of something greater.

I am overwhelmed with raw emotions that seem to explode out of me...
Joy, desire, want, longing and yes, pain,
Pain that I have wanted so long to enter.
As I’m consumed with my own experience, I realize I am not alone,
As Jesus has appeared before me, Holding me close in warm embrace.
I again am overwhelmed at the surging power of His love that surrounds me.

What glorious place of rest, of gentle breath, of effortless life.
Yet, life that is powerful and able to overcome everything
                     Because of Him who overcame.
My gaze is blurred by all that I’m feeling, As the tears well up and fall into the river,
Adding to its contents my own water of life.
In that moment, a hand touches my eyes, wipes the tears away, and holds my head.
I open my eyes to see something beyond description – wet eyes that are blazing
With passionate love and a smile that causes my heart to faint, with bowed fear
                          but longing embrace.

I instantly feel within my heart His joy,
A joy that penetrates ever fear and failure that continues to remain.
And ever so quietly, I realize the river is rising to consume us.
As it reaches my neck, I look with perplexed eyes to my Beloved,
And still He remains a breath away, holding my head in His Nail-Pierced Hands.
I’m strangely at ease, almost incapable of moving,
My heart beating slowly but with much purpose.
My mind has quit running, and taken its place before the High Mind,
A Mind tied side-by-side to the Heart.
As the river rises to gently roll over us,
I am aware of its presence, yet in a strange way,
Every sense I have is not impaired, but intensified.
I still see, hear, smell, taste and can touch everything around me,
but know that I have settled into something that is all around me.

I realize that whatever direction I turn my head, Where ever I gaze with my eyes,
Jesus is there, in that same place, Always before me, always a breath away from my face, Locking
His Fire Eyes upon mine, Gently holding my head in His hands.
In that instant I realize, the River is HIM, the two are not separated.
Jesus is the River, and the River is Him.

As the vision begins to fade, my heart begins to light a deep, deep desire,
One that begins to burn with ever intense passion...
“Jesus, take me into your river, that I may live there with You,
Untouched by anything except your gaze and touch,
Surround me with YOU, I want You, O Prince of Peace,
For in You, is my world at rest,
The world of my heart, knowing it is held by You.”

As I sit here in the quietness of the early morning,
                      Reflecting upon this vision,
I long for its full fulfillment, not just today,
But everyday, for the rest of Eternity.
Then, ever so quietly, I hear the soft, quiet, yet loud invitation...
“Come, My Son, into the River of My Peaceful Heart,
All that I am is Yours, I want to be with You Now,
For Now will remain for Eternity.
Eternity is Now, it is not yesterday, nor tomorrow.
Come and abide in this River of My Heart.”

                          Lord, I cry, help me.
Remover every barrier to my coming, Enliven the pulse of your heart in mine,
That I may embrace you as you have embraced me.
May the offering of my heart to you, and the unshed tears within my eyes,
come forth to intensify the waters of Your Peace,
                        that flow all around me.
Intensify My Heart...I want to feel as You.
Fully Alive in all ways is my Cry, Father.
Oh Jesus, Lover of My Soul,
Enlarge my heart to contain ever more of you.
Thank you, O Prince of Peace.
                                 Amen.
